Who we are

Chapter & Choice is a book gifting service based in Salisbury, Wiltshire. When we say "we", "us" or "our" in this policy, we mean Chapter and Choice Limited. Our full company details are in our Terms of Service.

This policy explains what we collect, why, who we share it with and the choices you have. It covers people who buy gifts from us, people who receive them, account holders, newsletter subscribers and visitors to our website.

If you have any questions, or want to use any of your rights, contact us:

How we use your information

UK data protection law says we need a lawful reason ("lawful basis") for each way we use your information. Ours are:

What we use it for

Our lawful basis

Taking your order and payment, sending gift emails or certificates, letting recipients choose their books, and delivering them

Contract: we need it to provide what you've bought (or what has been bought for you)

Sending order confirmations, delivery updates and reminders that a gift is waiting to be redeemed

Contract

Running your account

Contract

Answering your questions and handling problems with an order

Contract, or legitimate interests (helping people who contact us)

Asking gifters to review us, and checking with recipients that their books arrived

Legitimate interests: hearing how we did and making sure orders arrived safely

Sending marketing emails, such as new stacks and offers

Consent, or for existing customers, "soft opt-in" (see "Emails we send")

Publishing reviews you choose to leave

Consent: you choose to submit it

Keeping our website secure and working properly

Legitimate interests

Keeping financial records, such as invoices and VAT records

Legal obligation

We don't sell your information, and we don't use it to make automated decisions that have a legal or similarly significant effect on you.

If you've been sent a gift

Someone who knows you has bought you a Chapter & Choice gift. To make that happen, they gave us your name and, if they asked us to email the gift, your email address.

We use these details to:

  • send you your gift email, and remind you before the gift expires

  • let you choose your books (and any extra) and tell us where to send them

  • deliver your books, send you an order confirmation and check they arrived safely

The person who sent the gift won't see which books you chose or your delivery address. Your gift expires two months after the gift email is sent, and nothing is sent if you don't redeem it.

We won't send you marketing emails unless you sign up for them yourself. If you don't want your gift, contact us and we'll delete your details.

Emails we send

Service emails. These are about an order or account: order confirmations, gift emails, reminders that a gift is waiting, delivery updates and password resets. We send them because they're part of the service, so you can't unsubscribe from them while you have an order or account with us. We send these through Mailgun.

Marketing emails. These tell you about new stacks, gifting ideas and offers. We send them through Brevo, and only:

  • if you've signed up through our website (for example, our sign-up form offering 10% off your first order), or

  • if you've bought from us and didn't opt out when we gave you the chance at checkout. We'll only email you about similar products.

Every marketing email has an unsubscribe link, and you can also email us to stop them at any time. Unsubscribing won't affect service emails about an order you've placed.

Reviews and feedback

After your order has arrived, we may email you to ask how it went and invite you to leave a review.

  • If you bought a gift, we may send you one email asking how it went, with a link to our review form. We send this ourselves, through our email provider, Mailgun. We send it because we have a legitimate interest in hearing how our service went. You can opt out at any time by contacting us.

  • If you received a gift, we'll send you an email to check your books arrived safely, with a link to our review form in case you'd like to leave a review. We send this ourselves, through our email provider, Mailgun.

Our review form is run by Tally, a third-party form provider, which stores what you enter on our behalf. If you leave a review, it may be published on our website, shown with your first name and last initial. If you choose to give your email address on the form, we'll only use it to get in touch about your order. Reviews you leave on Google are covered by Google's privacy policy.

To opt out of review emails, or to ask us to remove a review, contact us at support@chapterandchoice.co.uk.

Cookies and analytics

We only use cookies that are essential for our website to work, for example to keep items in your basket, keep you signed in and protect forms from misuse. Cloudflare may also set a cookie to protect the site from attacks. Because these cookies are essential, we don't need to ask for your consent, and we don't use advertising or tracking cookies.

Analytics. We use Fathom Analytics to understand how many people visit our website and which pages are most useful, so we can keep improving it. Fathom doesn't use cookies and doesn't identify you. Your IP address is only processed briefly and isn't stored, so neither we nor Fathom can tell who you are, and no personal data is kept over time. Our lawful basis is our legitimate interest in improving our website and business. You can read more on Fathom's website.

Your rights

Under UK data protection law you have the right to:

  • Access: ask for a copy of the information we hold about you

  • Rectification: ask us to correct information that's wrong or incomplete

  • Erasure: ask us to delete your information

  • Restriction: ask us to limit how we use your information

  • Object: object to how we use your information, including for marketing at any time

  • Portability: ask us to send your information to you or another organisation

  • Withdraw consent: where we rely on your consent, withdraw it at any time

To use any of these rights, email support@chapterandchoice.co.uk. There's no charge, and we'll respond within one month. Some rights depend on the circumstances. For example, we have to keep order records for tax purposes even if you ask us to delete them.

How to complain. If you're unhappy with how we've used your information, please contact us first and we'll do our best to put it right. You can also complain to the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO):

  • Website: ico.org.uk/make-a-complaint

  • Helpline: 0303 123 1113

  • Post: Information Commissioner's Office, Wycliffe House, Water Lane, Wilmslow, Cheshire, SK9 5AF

Children

Many of our gifts are for children, but our website and accounts are for adults. When a gift is for a child, we ask that the gift email goes to a parent or carer, who chooses the books and gives the delivery address. We don't knowingly collect information directly from children under 13.

Keeping your information safe

We use secure, reputable services, our website runs over an encrypted connection, and access to customer information is limited to people who need it. No system is completely secure, so if we ever have a breach that puts you at risk, we'll tell you and the ICO as the law requires.

Changes to this policy

We'll update this policy when the way we use information changes, and show the date of the latest version at the top. If a change affects you significantly, we'll let you know by email.
